You can download rules 1.0b here: http://www.legionwargames.com/legion_ici_cest_la_france.html. No major changes, just a few more clarifications. But take a look.

I posted this at Strategikon but I think it could be of interest here too:

FLN will gain 1 ops by contesting a major city, which he will if he recruits 3 faileks in one. Let's calculate if it is worth doing all this:

FLN recruits 3 faileks in Alger (-1,5 ops)(2 mouss. and 1 moudj.)(Let's say that Alger is not in FLN or Support level). He will now contest Alger (+1 ops). Then he will make a structure attack (-2 ops) which has a 70% chance of receiving at least 1 hit. His total cost is now -2,5 ops.

France will lose 70% of 2 ops (probable result of a 1d3)(= -1,4 ops), then move in 4 paras/legions and attack (-2 ops). He will find 1,33 faileks and kill 1,0 failek. His total cost is -2,4 ops. But if the troop density level is less than 3 then FLN will still contest Alger and he will be able to conduct an insurgency there. So France might have to attack a second time which will increase his total cost to -4,4 ops.

Next time FLN will only have to recruit 1-2 faileks in Alger since he has survivors there which means that his total cost will now only be 1,5-2 ops. Therefore it is important that France gets Alger into Support level and that he plays at least one of his chits (les bleues/commando de chasse) which means that he will find 2,68 faileks and kill 2 of them per attack. This will make France's cost stay at 2,4 ops and FLN's cost will be 2 ops. More importantly is that just 1 surviving failek will only contest if the troop density level is 0 (much better for France).

But is it worth for FLN to have up to 9 faileks in the three major cities of the net "attrition" gain is up to 3 ops per major city? Yes, I would definitely say so. But if it falls down to about 0,5 ops per major city? that, I'm not sure of. Is it worth having up to 9 faileks fighting for three population 1 regions? It depends.

This is why the battle of Alger happened historically "early in the game". When FLN managed to get Alger into "FLN level" it was bad news for the French!! FLN would be able to continue attacking the French there and with France having to spend 4 ops just to kill 1 failek (which isn't even enough). France had to go in there, spend the ops neccessary, play the right chits and get the job done, once and for all.

This was written by Paul Aceto at Consimworld:

"I work with a guy whose wife is originally from Algeria. About a week ago, I had brought to work the copy of Battles magazine that had the very positive review of Ici, C'est la France. I was reading it at lunch, and said, "Hey Tony, your wife is from Algeria, right? Check this out - a game on the Algerian conflict." This guy is not a wargamer, and he was blown away that someone had made a game about it. He told me, "there isn't a day that goes by when she doesn't talk about the war." So he printed out the rules in French, showed them to his wife, and soon afterward bought the game. He says his wife told him she will only play the French, vowing, "this time we won't give in to the FLN!" I'll let you know how it goes if/when they do get a game in. I think I need to advise my friend to let his wife win for the good of his marriage."

A great story Wink

Kim, any news on a Tonkin "legion" release date?

No date yet. There are a few other games in front of me in the queue. I still need some serious playtesting and I hope some of you guys will be willing to spend the time and effort to help me out. But I'm not there yet.

By the way, I will test the concept of making some French "double units" in order to keep the counter density down in the delta. There were many units there which never left the area, for example, many of the Vietnamese units (not Viet Minh). So I have put them together into 4-step units (like the VM regiments) and I will simply call them garrison units. We will see how this works.

My main effort is not to make a super realistic game but rather to make a well functioning game which is exciting and which will give the right "feeling".

In the gamebox, there are units in the pool 1954 for the French.

I do not understand it and wonder why they are not either on the map beginning of the game or in the other years' pool...
Thanks for your inputs on that.
